The Perfecting Carnatic Music Level 1 curriculum covers and offers refreshing perspectives on time-honoured fundamentals of Carnatic Music. It including sections on theory, practice exercises like Sarali, Jantai, and other varishais and practice compositions like geethams, swarajathis and simple tiruppugazhs. Theoretical aspects like the Swara, Mela and Tala system, along with suggested listening. It is designed by one of the leading maestros of our time, Sangeet Samrat Chitravina N Ravikiran to provide a strong foundation in Carnatic Music for students and cultivate an awareness for perfection with correctness. This is the entry level course for Carnatic Music beginners who don’t have prior experience in learning music. The course will cover voice culture exercises, fundamentals of music theory, sarali varishais and jantai varishai.
Perfecting Carnatic Music Level 1 Syllabus
Duration : 8 weeks – Classes weekly once
(These are not included in the course and may be purchased separately.)
At the end of this course, students will be confident with aspects of melody and rhythm and be able to render the varishais in at least 2 speeds in both swaram and akaram.
They will also be trained on the practical implementation of various types of gamakas or also called ornamentation, such as Kampitam (oscillation) and sphuritam to help gain fluency in the rendition of double notes through the jantai varishais exercises
Students will be taught the concept and names of the 16-note system unique to Carnatic music.Courses include review sessions by the Director, Chitravina N Ravikiran.
Appropriate assignments will be given to enable the development of the student’s musical intuition.
This course will build on the concepts from Beginner 100 and introduce Daatu Varishais (zig-zag sequences), Melsthayi Varishais (higher-octave sequences) and Alankarams (Sequences in different talas).

At the end of this session, students will have an increased vocal range and a good command of notes. They will be able to render all the exercises in 3-4 speeds in swaram and akaram.
They will learn about the 5 varieties of jatis and prominent talas like Adi, Roopakam, Khanda Chapu and Mishra Chapu.
Students will grasp the concept of tala angas (parts) and jaatis.Courses include review sessions by the Director, Chitravina N Ravikiran. Appropriate assignments will be given to enable the development of the student’s musical intuition.
Songs 1-10 from Lambodara to Hariharavinuta will be covered in this session. See Table of Contents in Perfecting Carnatic Music Level 1.

At the end of this session, students will be able to appreciate the concept of Ragas in Carnatic Music and have an introduction to the simplest Carnatic Music compositions, Geethams.
They will understand how to learn a composition by identifying the composer, raga scale, key phrases from the raga and how to enunciate and articulate the lyrics clearly.
They will get a strong foundation in gamakas specific to the taught ragas, essential for learning advanced compositions.
Guided listening sessions of senior vocalists and instrumentalists will also be included.
They will also be able to sing the scale of a few select ragas from the Raga list given in the book.Courses include review sessions by the Director, Chitravina N Ravikiran. Appropriate assignments will be given to enable the development of the student’s musical intuition.
